2020 has been a turbulent year so far, with many people having to think outside the box to keep their business going, but for Jennifer Akhaya, a young private chef from Enfield, it was more about thinking about what to put inside the box….
Jennifer Akhaya lost her job as a private chef in May as a direct result of the global pandemic, but instead of taking it lying down, the culinary entrepreneur decided to take matters into her own hands and set up a gourmet recipe box company to rival all others.
Bowled Over is a joyous celebration of international cuisine, fresh flavours and healthy recipes. The company reflects its audience, in being young, bold, fast-paced and health-conscious, and it is taking the recipe box market by storm. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer to found out more about Bowled Over…
Your idea for ‘Bowled Over’ was a labour of love during lockdown. Can you tell us more about the concept and why you decided to launch Bowled Over right now?
Bowled Over is the recipe box that celebrates bold, bowl dishes inspired by cuisine from across the world. We aim to be a vibrant, energetic addition to the recipe box market, making home cooking quick, easy, exciting and flavourful.
The company was birthed after I lost my job as a chef during the Covid-19 crisis. Although the circumstances were not ideal, Bowled Over is all about joy through food, and I hope to inspire others with my story, that despite what happens, there is always hope and joy.
Describe your food style in five words…
Bowled Over’s food style is bright, bold, flavourful, absolutely delicious! ☺
What kind of ingredients and flavours can we expect from a Bowled Over dish?
Expect ingredients and flavours from across the world, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and South America amongst other regions/continents. Being part of Bowled Over is like taking a trip on a global culinary journey.
How do you get inspiration for your recipes?
The bowls are inspired by my travels and career, as I’ve had the opportunity to explore food and flavours across the world. Daily life, family and friends also inspire many bowls.
You do a Bowled Over of the moment- What is the process for curating such a dish?
The ‘bowl of the moment’ highlights our most popular or new and exclusive bowls and is a fantastic opportunity for customers to enjoy cooking something deliciously fresh and exciting, often ‘wowing’ themselves and their ‘IG’ (Instagram) friends. We love when our customers share their bowls of goodness.
Your dishes also have different stories. Can you tell us a little about that?
At Bowled Over each dish has a life of its own, its name, story, history and personality. My hope is for customers to connect with the bowls beyond the ingredients and elements that make up the dish. We believe that food is more than fuel, so we invite customers to ‘meet’ the dishes and learn about their stories.
Now more people are cooking from home than ever. What advice would you give to someone who does not have much home cooking experience but wants to learn?
My advice would firstly be – do not fear! It’s the best time to learn, and with anything, the more you practise, the better you get. My background as a cookery teacher means I understand the challenges that new cooks face, which is why at Bowled Over, we have done what we can to make the home cooking experience easy and quick. We are also continuing to work on ways to make it even easier and faster.
