It’s Autumn, the winter coats are out and we are suddenly thinking about dressing with many variations of layers. Pulling off a hat with a matching bag and coat is no mean feat and that is why we love Princess Diana, the impeccable princess who always put her best foot forward.
There are few people who create an everlasting impact on fashion. But whether Diana was working out, parenting, dining or just being utterly fabulous, she managed to make style her own. It’s no wonder her old sweatshirt sold for a staggering £50,000 at auction!
We have curated some of our favourite Autumnal looks that she famously wore…
Some people claimed she was ‘Shy Di’ before she got married and that she had a quiet demeanour and would bend over to speak with people. But being 5’10 she actually did so to make them feel comfortable rather than towering over them. This look is perfect for autumnal style with a very berry check complete with beret.Embed from Getty Images
When Princess Diana left The Harbour Club in Chelsea she made it the most famous gym in the world. But the paparazzi knew she worked out there so she created a cunning plan. At some stage, Virgin boss extradordinaire Richard Branson had given her a branded sweatshirt with the company’s iconic logo. For all intents, it probably should have ended up in the back of her cupboard beside many other gifted forgotten T-shirts and discarded ’80s dresses. Instead, she deployed it to a devastating advantage.
The Princess decided that she would wear the jumper every day to enter and leave the Harbour Club. By donning the same dull piece of clothing, Diana was ensuring the baying paparazzi got essentially the same shot of her. Day after day, week after week, thus denying them any new (and saleable) shots of her. We think it’s a gorgeous Autumnal casuallook!Embed from Getty Images
Out and About
This iconic photograph of Princess Diana at Sandringham attending a christening epitomizes glamourous power dressing of the 80’s. With the large 80’s houndstooth complimenting the monochromatic check with a dash of red, this is classic Diana as she looks every bit the people’s princess.Embed from Getty Images
Princess Diana wore her heart on her sleeve and supported many charities including Aids and The British Heart Foundation. Here she is attending Polo at The Guards Club with her son, Prince William. Her casual daytime look is complete with gold hoops and leather boots. This vintage look is still very much relevant today, and a snuggly style for Autumn days.Embed from Getty Images
Trooping the Colour
It is no surprise that being part of the Royal Family involves frequent social occasions and trooping the colour is always a quintessentially British tradition. Although, held in June every year, we think the bright green of this matching suit and hat, complimenting the colour of Harry’s outfit, would be perfect for Autumn days too. Harry also chose the perfect moment to stick his tongue out!Embed from Getty Images
Princess Diana always kept it local and could often be seen wandering and shopping in and around Knightsbridge, particularly at the iconic Harrods. Here she wears high waisted jeans, polo neck with her signature blazer and loafers. It is also a super cozy look as the cold days draw in.Embed from Getty Images
Dancing The Night Away
Diana’s dance with John Travolta, when she was aged just 24, was an image that went down in history. Apparently, she wanted to dance with Russian ballet dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, but as the clock struck midnight she was partnered with John.
And yet, their dance wasn’t the only star of the night. Once again, a dress of Diana’s went down in fashion history as iconic. Her off-the-shoulder, midnight blue, mermaid-style gown was even dubbed the “Travolta dress.” It sold at an auction for more than $309,000. We think it would make the perfect addition to wear to any Christmas party!Embed from Getty Images
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and this dress simply oozes glamour. It was ultimately dubbed ‘the revenge dress,’ as she wore it the night Prince Charles made a public announcement of his illicit affair in an attempt to have the public view him in a more sympathetic light. She wore it to the Vanity Fair party and her stylist, Anne Harvey, said she made sure she looked a million dollars so that all eyes were on her. If looks could kill, then this was it!Embed from Getty Images
