Most people invest time and money into ensuring their car does is not going to break down and keeping their home in a great condition but more often than not, we can fail to look after our own bodies. It is easily done in today’s busy world, but in the year of 2020 never before have we been thinking more about our health and wellbeing. So should you give your body an MOT? And what exactly does this involve?
I was invited to The House of Wellbeing so see exactly what happens when you look deeper into your health with a variation of simple and quick tests with instant results.
The London House of Wellbeing is a screening service that allows you to have direct access to specific health tests, including cholesterol, glucose, gluten, iron, thyroid, vitamin D, menopause, prostate and even urine infections. The health tests are conducted with results interpreted by pharmacist while you wait. As I entered The House of Wellbeing it is a far cry from the busy over-stretched waiting rooms that you often encounter at hospitals and doctor’s surgeries, and I was pleasantly surprised that it is a tranquil and relaxing setting with beautifully designed décor.
The idea was borne out of a desire to enable people to be in control of their own health and I chose to do the cholesterol, glucose and gluten test. I sat down with a friendly pharmacist as we went through my health background. I didn’t have any real symptoms but occasionally get a small amount of bloating (I put this down to my love of afternoon tea and my half-Italian heritage of copious amounts of pasta and pizza!) But I love exercising and have a varied diet, with cake only rearing its head on special occasions.
The test itself couldn’t be more easy. I would even go as far to say as relaxing! The pharmacist and I chatted away while she did a finger prick blood test, which did not hurt at all and was used on all three tests.
At The London House of Wellbeing you can decide yourself which tests you feel appropriate, selecting just one or the full MOT. Prices start from £25 per test and you can obtain the results immediately. The tests will give an indication of an ailment and is not a substitute for seeing a Doctor, however, should a test come up with a prediction it can then be used to refer to a Doctor, while The London House of Wellbeing can notify them of the results if consent is given to do so.
Why is a health MOT so important? And how often should we be thinking of our health? Everyone is at risk of developing problems at various points in life and sometimes these can be caught early on which can help reduce the issue greatly. As we don’t routinely have health checks on the NHS it is important to frequently check your health (many say even yearly) to find early signs of an existing or new ailment to then seek the most appropriate care.
It turns out I have extremely good cholesterol and glucose which I was really pleased about. But my gluten gave an indication that I could be intolerant! As someone with a penchant for all things bread, cake and pasta, I knew that I do consume a lot of gluten. Thankfully there are many gluten-free options available in most supermarkets, restaurants and eateries, so will be educating myself further. I now have the knowledge to also take the results to my doctor should I wish to discuss further. Verdict: Easy, stress-free, oh and my favourite? Absolutely no queues!
